OpenRouter alternatives: for developers, and for people who just want to use the models

OpenRouter is an API gateway for developers. If you write code, its alternatives are other gateways. If you just want to use GPT, Claude and Gemini, you need a different kind of tool.

OpenRouter comparison

OpenRouter is an API gateway: one key, 500+ models, pay as you go at the providers' own token prices plus a 5.5% fee when you buy credits. It is the right tool if you are writing code and want routing, failover and bring your own key.

The short answer

  • You write code and want one API for every model: stay on OpenRouter, or try LiteLLM, Portkey, Vercel AI Gateway or Cloudflare AI Gateway.
  • You want to chat, write and make images and video with every model: Krater Pro, $20 a month.
  • You want both: Krater Ultra, $49 a month, adds an OpenAI compatible API.

What OpenRouter costs

  • Token prices: passed through at each provider's own rate, no markup.
  • Buying credits: 5.5% fee by card ($0.80 minimum), 5% with crypto.
  • Free plan: 25+ free models, 50 requests a day.
  • Bring your own key: no fee up to $25,000 a month of usage, then 5%.
  • Business tier: 8% platform fee, up to 1,000 seats.

Stay on OpenRouter if

  • You call models from code and want automatic fallback when a provider goes down.
  • You already hold provider keys and want to route through them.
  • You need per request data controls, like blocking providers that train or enforcing zero data retention.
  • You need enterprise routing: EU or US only providers, SSO, per key limits, invoicing.

Why people look elsewhere

There are two very different groups. Engineers who outgrew a hosted gateway want self hosting, caching or tighter compliance. Their answer is another gateway (list below).

The second group never wanted an API. They signed up because it was the cheapest way to get GPT, Claude and Gemini in one place, then hit 50 free requests a day, card top ups with a fee, and a playground built for testing prompts rather than doing work.

Krater: for using the models, not routing them

Krater is a workspace, not a gateway. You pay a flat monthly price, get a credit balance, and every answer from any of 500+ models is billed on what it actually used. Images, video, voice and documents sit right next to the chat.

Developer gateways worth a look

  • LiteLLM: open source, self hosted, OpenAI compatible, with virtual keys and budgets.
  • Portkey: hosted gateway with guardrails and observability for teams.
  • Vercel AI Gateway and Cloudflare AI Gateway: built into platforms you may already deploy on.
  • TrueFoundry, Kong AI Gateway, Bifrost: production gateways focused on governance.
  • Together AI and Replicate: hosting for open models rather than routing across closed ones.

Switching to Krater

  • Pick a plan: chat, images and tools only is Pro at $20. Add an API key with Ultra at $49.
  • Search the model you used on OpenRouter by name in the model picker.
  • Run your usual prompt across three models in Model Arena and see what each answer costs.
  • Keep your OpenRouter balance for anything that genuinely needs routing controls. The two are not exclusive.

Highlights

Where OpenRouter is better

OpenRouter is better if you need BYOK, per request data policy controls, provider level routing or a free API tier. Krater has none of those.

Where Krater is better

Krater is better if you want to actually work with the models: one subscription, creative and document tools next to the chat, mobile apps, and no card top ups with a fee.

Same models, real usage billing

Both give you the same underlying models. Krater bills real usage in credits, so a long answer from a flagship model costs more credits than a short one from a small model, the same way it costs more tokens on OpenRouter.

Frequently asked questions

Is OpenRouter free?

Partly. The free plan gives you 25+ free models from 4 providers with a cap of 50 requests a day and low rate limits. Paid models need prepaid credits, and OpenRouter charges a 5.5 percent fee with an $0.80 minimum when you buy them.

Does OpenRouter mark up model prices?

No. OpenRouter states it passes through the underlying providers' token prices without markup. The cost is the 5.5 percent fee on credit purchases (5 percent for crypto), and a 5 percent fee on bring your own key usage above the monthly allowance.

Is Krater cheaper than OpenRouter?

It depends on how you use the models. Krater is a flat $20, $49 or $119 a month for a credit balance that is billed per answer on real usage, so light users pay a predictable amount and there is no top up fee. A developer sending high volumes of API traffic can pay less on OpenRouter at raw token prices, especially with BYOK. Krater does not offer BYOK.

Can I use Krater as an API like OpenRouter?

Yes, on the Ultra plan ($49 a month) and above. Krater exposes OpenAI compatible endpoints for text, image, video and audio models, documented per model on the API access pages. The Pro plan is chat and tools only.

What is the best OpenRouter alternative for developers?

For code, the alternatives are other gateways: LiteLLM if you want to self host, Portkey or TrueFoundry for hosted governance, Vercel AI Gateway or Cloudflare AI Gateway if you already deploy there. Krater is the alternative if you want to use the models in a workspace rather than route API traffic.
