What Descript actually offers students
Descript's help center documents the Non-profit / Education plan: students, educators and academic staff at accredited institutions get the full Hobbyist feature set at $8 per Editor/month (annual) or $12 per Editor/month (monthly) - versus $16-24 on the standard Hobbyist plan.Approval is manual: you apply, Descript reviews, then you switch your Drive to the EDU/NFP subscription yourself. The plan allows up to 3 Editor seats per Drive.
How to claim the Descript student discount
- Create a free Descript account using your school email address.
- Add a payment method (you are not charged yet).
- Submit the education application form linked from Descript's help center.
- Once approved, sign in, open App Settings and switch your Drive to the EDU/NFP plan.
The gotchas worth knowing
- Approval is not instant. A human reviews the application - apply before your project deadline, not during it.
- 3-seat cap. The EDU plan tops out at 3 Editor seats per Drive; bigger student teams need Creator or Business.
If you are not eligible - the cheaper route
Descript's free plan already includes recording, editing and transcription - the EDU plan adds watermark-free export and the full AI toolkit at half the standard price.
And if what you actually need is AI help across the board - writing, research, images, video, coding - a single-tool discount is still a single tool. Krater's student offer takes 15% off for a year on a workspace that bundles 500+ models for a flat $20/month list price. Compare Descript's full pricing with Krater's plans before deciding.
