When something goes wrong

Every error Krater shows includes a short code like INSUFFICIENT_CREDITS or RATE_LIMITED. Use this page as a reference — find your code below, see why it happens, and follow the fix.

If your error isn’t listed, it’s likely a temporary upstream issue — retry once, then contact hey@krater.ai if it persists.

Credits & billing

What it means: Your account doesn’t have enough credits to complete this request.

Why it happens:

How to fix:

REQUEST_TOO_EXPENSIVE

What it means: A single request exceeds the safety cap — 500 credits per chat message or 2,500 credits per orchestrated agent run.

Why it happens:

How to fix:

RESERVATION_FAILED

What it means: Krater couldn’t reserve credits for the request before sending it to the AI provider.

Why it happens: Usually a transient database issue or a race condition when credits changed mid-request.

How to fix: Retry the request. If it keeps happening within a few minutes, contact support.

CONTEXT_LIMIT_EXCEEDED

What it means: Your conversation is too long for the context window available on your plan.

Why it happens:

How to fix:

Plans & access

PLAN_REQUIRED

What it means: The feature you’re trying to use isn’t available on your current plan.

How to fix: Upgrade your plan. Every feature lists its required plan on the pricing page.

SUBSCRIPTION_REQUIRED

What it means: You need an active paid subscription to use this feature. You may have a past-due invoice or a cancelled subscription.

How to fix:

AUTO_ROUTER_PLAN_REQUIRED

What it means: Auto Routers (Lite, Smart, Power, Elite, and Frontier) select a model for each request and require an Ultra or Max plan.

The exception: Smart Auto Router runs inside every Persona chat, on any plan.

How to fix: Upgrade to Ultra or Max to unlock all Auto Routers, open a Persona chat, or manually pick a specific model.

AUTH_REQUIRED

What it means: You need to be signed in to use this feature.

How to fix: Sign in or create an account.

AUTH_INVALID

What it means: Your authentication token wasn’t accepted by the server.

Why it happens:

How to fix: Reload the page. If you’re asked to sign in again, do so.

SESSION_EXPIRED

What it means: Same as above (HTTP 401 with no code). Your login session is no longer valid.

How to fix: Reload the page and sign in again.

NO_ACCOUNT

What it means: Krater couldn’t find an account tied to your current session.

Why it happens: Usually happens right after an account deletion, or if the account row was removed but the session cookie is still around.

How to fix: Sign out completely, then sign in again. If the error persists, contact hey@krater.ai.

ACCOUNT_SUSPENDED

What it means: Your account has been suspended for a violation of our Terms or Acceptable Use policy.

How to fix: Email hey@krater.ai to appeal or request details. We respond to every appeal.

Rate limits & transient errors

RATE_LIMITED

What it means: You’ve sent too many requests in a short window (HTTP 429).

Why it happens:

How to fix:

SERVER_ERROR

What it means: Something went wrong on our side (HTTP 5xx).

How to fix: Retry after a few seconds. If it persists for more than a minute, check status.krater.ai (linked from the in-app incident banner when we detect issues).

NETWORK_ERROR

What it means: Your browser couldn’t reach Krater at all. This is not a Krater-side error.

Why it happens:

How to fix:

UPSTREAM_PROVIDER_ERROR

What it means: The AI provider behind the model returned an error. This is not Krater-side.

Why it happens:

How to fix:

Other

OPERATION_FAILED

What it means: A generic fallback error. The server rejected the request but the specific cause isn’t one of the codes above.

How to fix: Retry. If it happens on the same request twice, check that your input is valid (file sizes, URLs, parameters) or contact support with a screenshot.

COMING_SOON

What it means: The feature is temporarily disabled or not yet live in your region.

How to fix: Nothing to fix — we’ll roll it out soon. Follow the Krater blog for release announcements.
